“Occupy North,” conceived during “The Arctic Circle” art residency in October 2015, is a bold artistic initiative responding to the political tensions surrounding Arctic territorial claims. In two transformative phases, the project challenges traditional notions of nationhood and territory.

The symbolic act of planting a flag physically stakes a claim in
the Arctic, challenging geopolitical norms. This performative gesture is complemented by a strategic legal pursuit through the United Nations and the Norwegian government, thrusting the project beyond art into international governance.

Documented through photography, video, and visual artifacts, the legacy of “Occupy North” “Occupy North” aims
to reshape narratives, question power structures, and prompt
conversations about the environmental impact of political decisions.

I knew I wanted to Experiment new ideas for kinetic installation inspired by wind.
I also knew I wanted to use material such rope, pulleys and close loop pulleys system.
Yet for months I did not know were I would land my space ship and in all honesty in some respect I still don’t know.

This classic example of when you love the idea and the concept behind a project, while struggling to achieve that balance between concept, esthetic and emotional grab that spark in the audience a level of intuitive appreciation. This allowing them to venture deeply into the concept of work while discover their own personal personal connection with the work.

For this installation I started with the basics: How wind works?
Fro more detail on how meteorology works look at my previous post : http://www.maiamarinelli.com/2015/04/04/work-in-process-glogauair/

Using basic meteorological maps I traced the movement of air from high to low pressure at sea level up to when, reaching the stratosphere, air loops around creating cycle of air moving both horizontally and vertically in space.

I then interpret those loops of air as a close loop pulley system that, with both its shape and movement, represent the movement of wind.

I applied this same process to more complex maps looking to see what kind of pattern would surface form this process.

Used Rhino to draw 3D sketches in 3-dymetional space I experiment with different map.

While working with Rhino I became fascinated on the graphical properties of those patter starting to think of it as drawing in space.

To take this concept even farther I stripped all 3dimetional axes as well as the wall form the Rhino sketch and export it as a flat vector graphic image in Illustrator.

I then printed and started to experiment with acetone printing on paper treating this drawing as work of art itself, disconnected by their mathematical/physical roots, allowing my self to interpret and intervene on them freely.

Here are some results of the experiment, which by the way is still in process.

In my previous prototype I used motor to control the system, however I found the noise of the motor rather distracting  and I wanted the audience to concentrate on the movement of the rope and on the sound it makes as it pass through the pulleys evoking more of the a nautical dimension the work was inspired by.
I also wanted to wanted to strip the installation of all unnecessary distractions and control the all work with less.

I’m now tinkering with a  bicycle powered concept but I”m not sure at this point if it will work and If I the all thing NEEDS to work .. Some time simple is best .
A little bit last minute so wish me luck in pulling this out in time of for the open studio on the 26.
